As part of the Catholic Sister Communicators Network, Ghana (CASCON-GH) media training workshop, Catholic Sisters participated in an engaging session on interview techniques and news writing.
The training funded by Hilton Foundation is being held at the Centre for Spiritual Renewal at Santasi Kumasi from July 29 to August 2, 2026.
It aimed to equip Sister Communicators with the essential skills needed to gather information and produce accurate, engaging, and credible stories for publication.

A major focus of the session was the importance of the 5Ws and H- Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How.
These six fundamental questions form the backbone of effective news writing, ensuring that every story is complete, balanced, and meaningful.
A well-written report should answer each of these questions to help readers fully understand the event or issue being reported.
The facilitator, Ms Jennifer Kwakyewaa Akuamoah, a Strategic Communications and Operations Leader, emphasised the importance of understanding one’s audience.

She explained that before writing any story, a communicator must first identify the intended readers, assess their level of knowledge, and determine the information they need.
Stories should therefore be written in a clear, relevant, and accessible manner to effectively communicate the intended message.
The session also stressed the importance of thorough preparation and research.

Before conducting an interview or writing a news story, communicators should gather background information, verify facts, and prepare thoughtful and relevant questions.
Careful research not only enhances the accuracy of a story but also builds confidence during interviews and strengthens the credibility of the final publication.
Participants also explored the qualities of an effective interviewer.

The Sisters learned the importance of active listening, asking clear and open-ended questions, and treating interviewees with professionalism, courtesy, and respect.
Accurate note-taking and diligent fact-checking were highlighted as essential practices for ensuring that published information is reliable, accurate, and trustworthy.
Reflecting on the session, I gained a deeper appreciation of the principles of journalism and effective reporting.

I learned that compelling stories are built on careful preparation, thorough research, a clear understanding of the audience, and the effective application of the 5Ws and 1H. These valuable skills will enable me to produce stories that are informative, accurate, engaging, and capable of inspiring and informing diverse audiences.
As a Catholic Sister Communicator, these skills will also strengthen my ability to tell the stories of our apostolates, witness to the Gospel through the media, and communicate the life-giving mission of my congregation with authenticity, professionalism, and hope.
