Accra has become a beacon of faith and energy as the West Africa Youth Days ( WAYD) 2026 unfold from September 7 to 11.
The Church gathers thousands of young Catholics to celebrate, reflect, and commit themselves to shaping a more peaceful and hopeful future under “Take Courage: Catholic Youth as Actors and Agents of Peace and Hope in West Africa.”
This celebration is more than a festival — it is a prophetic call to courage, unity, and transformation in a region yearning for peace.

Youth as Builders of Peace
In a sub-region often tested by political instability, economic challenges, and cultural tensions, the Catholic youth stand as ambassadors of reconciliation. Their energy, creativity, and resilience are not only gifts but responsibilities.
Through dialogue, service, and witness, they are called to dismantle walls of division and sow seeds of fraternity.Consecrated women and men, priests, and lay leaders accompany them, reminding us that peace is not an abstract dream but a daily choice.
The youth’s courage to forgive, to collaborate across borders, and to resist violence is the Church’s living testimony in West Africa.

In a region marked by challenges of conflict, migration, and economic uncertainty, the Catholic youth are being called to rise as ambassadors of reconciliation. Their courage to forgive, to dialogue, and to collaborate across ethnic and national lines is the seed of lasting peace.Workshops, cultural exchanges, and liturgical celebrations remind them that peace is not simply the absence of war but the presence of justice, fraternity, and solidarity.
Hope Rooted in Faith
Hope is the heartbeat of this gathering. In liturgies, workshops, and cultural exchanges, young Catholics are discovering that hope in Christ is not passive optimism but active engagement. It is the courage to believe that tomorrow can be better, even when today feels uncertain. From Accra’s bustling streets to rural parishes across the sub-region, the youth are learning that their faith equips them to be agents of social renewal — transforming despair into possibility, and isolation into community. Hope is the heartbeat of this gathering.
Through prayer, catechesis, and shared testimonies, the youth discover that hope in Christ is not passive optimism but active engagement. It is the courage to believe in tomorrow, even when today feels uncertain. This hope is expressed in their songs, their service projects, and their determination to be agents of social renewal in their communities.

Consecrated Women: Living Witnesses
One of the most striking aspects of this year’s celebration is the strong presence of Consecrated Women — Sisters from across West Africa who have come to walk alongside the youth. Their presence is more than symbolic; it is transformative.
Role models of courage: By their vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, they embody the courage to live counterculturally, showing young people that true freedom is found in surrender to God.
Mentors of hope: Their daily witness of prayer, service, and resilience inspires youth to see vocation not as limitation but as a path of joy and fulfillment.

Companions in discernment:
In conversations and workshops, Sisters listen to the struggles of young people, guiding them to discover God’s call in their lives — whether to marriage, priesthood, or consecrated life. For the youth, seeing so many Consecrated women gathered in Accra is a reminder that holiness is possible in everyday life, and that courage and hope are not abstract ideals but lived realities.
A Sister’s Witness
As a Sister Communicator, I see firsthand the spark in the eyes of these young people. Their songs, their questions, their laughter — all proclaim that the Church is alive.
They remind us that courage is contagious, and hope multiplies when shared. My role is to amplify their voices, to tell their stories, and to ensure that the wider Church hears the cry of a generation ready to lead. These youth are not just the future; they are the present, actors already shaping the narrative of peace and hope in West Africa.

Vocation Drive
As a Vocation Promoter, I witness the spark in the eyes of these young people when they encounter the Sisters. Their laughter, their questions, and their eagerness to learn show that the Church’s future is alive and vibrant.
The Sisters’ presence reassures them that they are not alone in their journey — that generations before them have walked this path of faith and continue to walk beside them.
Hope for the Future
The West Africa

Youth Days in Accra are a sacred moment of encounter. They call every young Catholic to rise with courage, to embrace their vocation as peacemakers, and to embody hope in a region that longs for healing. With the guiding presence of Consecrated women, the youth are reminded that courage is contagious and hope is enduring.
May this celebration ignite a movement where the youth of West Africa stand tall as agents of peace and bearers of hope : a generation unafraid to take courage, because Christ walks with them.
