Girl Child Advocate Educates Pupils of Keta OLA RC Convent Girls Basic School on Breast Cancer

Miss Florence Akakpo, a volunteer Girl-Child Advocate and an Old Girl of Keta OLA RC Convent Girls Basic School in the Volta Region of Ghana, on Friday, October 18, 2024 created breast cancer awareness in her alma mater.

According to Miss Akakpo, she had organized Breast Cancer Awareness Programmes various schools and could not leave out her own younger siblings in OLA Convent.

“I have volunteered and organized Breast Cancer Awareness Programmes in various schools and as an old pupil of OLA RC Convent Girls Basic, I deem it a great privilege to be given the opportunity to make an impact on my younger siblings”, she said.

Miss Akakpo and her team educated the young girls to take good care of themselves and adopt healthy lifestyles that would help them prevent breast cancer.

They made the girls aware that everybody was at risk of breast cancer and advised them to avoid certain lifestyles that might increase the risk of getting breast cancer. Among the examples sited were alcohol intake and wearing one brassiere for a long time without washing it.

They also made the girls aware that, the risk of getting breast cancer increases as one grows, especially women. They advised the girls to examine their breast regularly for early dictation and cure.

The girls were taking through the ways of examining of their breasts and were also thaught some of the symptoms of breast cancer.

Some of the symptoms pointed out to the girls were abnormal lump in breast, bloody discharge from the nipple, and change in colour of breast, pain in breast and nipple and pitting of breast skin.

Miss Akakpo and her team donated some packs of pencil and pen to OLA Convent Girls after the programme.
