One of the key apostolates of the Handmaids of the Holy Child Jesus Congregation (HHCJ) in the Ghana Province, aligned with their “All-embracing charism,” is promoting inclusive education for all.

  • In a recent report, Sr. Emmanuella Dakurah, HHCJ, emphasized the congregation’s commitment to educational ministry. In one of their schools located in Nsoatre, Bono Region, Ghana, known as Handmaids Preparatory and Junior High School, they have established provisions to support children with physical challenges. A center has been set up for these children, where they are welcomed into the boarding house, especially the girls, and enrolled in regular classes alongside their peers. During an interview with the project coordinator, Sr. Scholastica Yiripare, HHCJ, she shared, “Most of these children are often considered worthless. Some face verbal abuse, even from their parents, leading to neglect.” The sisters actively seek funds from both church communities and individuals to cover the children’s tuition and other basic needs. This initiative has been ongoing for several years

Sr. Emmanuella expressed, “We are very happy to help give hope to the hopeless and the vulnerable.” Their support goes beyond education; they also provide essential mobility equipment such as wheelchairs and crutches.

Sr. Scholastica Yiripare highlighted that the public should be aware that the school offers an inclusive environment where children with physical challenges can thrive. She clarified, “This is not a special school; we accept physically challenged children who can manage themselves.”

Sr. Emmanuella concluded by stating that the sisters find fulfillment in their work because they are able to truly give hope to those in need.
