Members of the Conference of Major Superiors of Religious, Ghana who are currently having their 2nd Biannual Meeting at the Holy Cross Continuing Formation Centre, Brafoyaw-Cape Coast, would be joining the many Catholics in Accra to embark on an Environmental Prayer Walk against galamsey on Friday, October 11, 2024.

In a welcome address at the opening of the Biannual Meeting on Wednesday, October 9, Very Rev. Paul Saa-Dade Ennin, SMA, President of the Conference of Major Superiors Religious, Ghana, who made the announcement called on all Priests, Religious and Catholics to join in the Prayer Walk as a collaborative ministry.

“As Consecrated Persons, we recognize our sacred responsibility to promote values that counter corruption, environmental degradation, and social injustice, foster a culture of transparency, accountability, and ethical leadership and empower citizens to demand better from their leaders,” he said.

The theme for the Meeting is: Working Together for a Sustainable, Peaceful and Corruption Free Ghana: Collaboration between CMSR-GH and Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference.

Fr. Ennin, who is the Provincial Superior of the Society of African Missions (SMA) in Ghana, averred that “Our collaboration with the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) strengthens our collective voice and action.”

He noted that “It is in this regard that we are collaborating with the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra to embark on an Environmental Prayer Walk this Friday, 11 October 2024 to once again shout with all our voice to the Lord to “Send forth His Spirit and Renew the Face of our land.”

“It is also a cry to all those who love Ghana and her future, that to stand indifferent and watch unscrupulous persons destroy our common home and poison our water bodies irresponsibly, is equally an irresponsible behaviour,” he emphasised.

According to Fr. Ennin, the theme of the Biannual Meeting is a combination of “Collaborative ministry” of the GCBC and the Jubilee theme of Care for creation-Protection of the environment which we as Major Superiors have taken as our special battle cry for the Jubilee Year 2025.

In March this year, the CMSR-GH laid out its Jubilee Year activities with the passion prayer of the Psalmist “Send forth Your Spirit Oh Lord and Renew the Face of the earth” Psalm 104: 30.

Since then, the Religious Men and Women in Ghana have been faithful to their programme. Its launch on May Day in collaboration with the Catholic Professional Guild, followed by the Candle Light Procession in many Dioceses to promote care for the environment in June  and the ongoing Mini-Jubilee Celebrations for religious at Arch/Diocesan level.

Touching specifically on the Meeting, he said the Major Superiors were gathered to deliberate together on ways and means of strengthening their collaboration with Bishops in the key areas of Environmental stewardship: Protecting Ghana’s natural resources and our common home; Anti-corruption advocacy: Promoting transparency and accountability and Peaceful elections: Promoting peace, justice and respect in our country

He prayed that their collective efforts would reflect these values, transforming Ghana into a beacon of hope and peace.
