Bullying in Schools is a pervasive issue that significantly impacts the mental health and academic performance of students. In the Northern Region of Ghana, this problem is prevalent across all levels of education, that is, from basic schools to universities. Total Life Enhancement Centre Ghana (TOLECGH) and Mind ‘N’ Health Foundation have witnessed at firsthand the detrimental effects of bullying on the youth. This articles aims to shed light on the experiences and interventions undertaken by TOLECGH and Mind ‘N’ Health Foundation to address this critical issue in the Northern region of Ghana.

TOLECGH is a mental health and psychosocial support service provider. In a twin approach, the organisation focuses on advocacy and provision of therapy. Mind ‘N’ Health is also a mental health organisation interested in advocating for mental health for adults and the youth. By raising awareness and delivering professional psychological services, TOLECGH and Mind ‘N’ Health Foundation strive to enhance mental well-being and foster holistic development within communities.

In Basic Schools, bullying often manifests as physical aggression, verbal harassment, and social exclusion. Younger children are particularly vulnerable as they are still developing their social skills and self-esteem. TOLECGH and Mind ‘N’ Health Foundation have conducted numerous advocacy and school-based presentations (talks) in basic schools to educate students, teachers, and parents about the signs of bullying and the importance of fostering a supportive and inclusive environment.

Bullying in Senior High Schools

In Senior High Schools, bullying can become more sophisticated and damaging, including cyberbullying and psychological manipulation. Adolescents are at a critical stage of their identity formation, and bullying can severely affect their self-worth and academic engagement. The organization’s interventions in Senior High Schools focus on peer mediation programmes, mental health counselling, and the creation of actively enforced anti-bullying policies.

Bullying in Colleges and Universities

At the tertiary level, bullying often takes the form of hazing, cyberbullying, and discrimination. College and university students may face immense pressure to conform, leading to anxiety, depression, and even suicidal thoughts. These two organizations collaborate with higher education institutions to provide mental health services, conduct awareness campaigns, and establish support groups (peer counsellor training) for victims of bullying.

Interventions by TOLECGH and Mind ‘N’ Health Foundation include:

  • Workshops and seminars: We organized educational sessions to educate students, teachers, and parents about the impact of bullying and strategies to combat it.
  • Counseling services: We provided one-on-one and group counselling sessions for victims of bullying to help them cope and recover from their experiences.
  • Peer mediation Programmes: We trained students to mediate conflicts among their peers to foster a supportive and respectful school environment.
  • Anti-bullying policies: Assisted schools in developing and implementing effective policies and procedures.
  • Awareness campaigns: Conducted campaigns to raise awareness about the consequences of bullying and promote a culture of kindness and respect on radio and other traditional media.

Conclusion

Bullying in schools across the Northern Region is a significant challenge that requires a multifaceted approach. TOLECGH and Mind ‘N’ Health Foundation remain committed to addressing this issue through comprehensive interventions aimed at prevention, support, and policy advocacy. By working closely with educational institutions and the community, we strive to create a safer and more nurturing academic environment for all students to learn towards building their future and the future of Ghana.
