THURSDAY OF THE THIRD WEEK OF LENT

Theme: "Harden not your hearts"

The sad reality of the theme is played out in the gospel of today. The people who witnessed the miracle performed by Jesus could not open their hearts to accept this mercy of God in their lives but only to resort to blasphemy.

In Luke 11:14-23, we witness Jesus casting out a demon from a mute man, and the crowd’s mixed reactions. Some are amazed, while others accuse Him of using the power of Beelzebul, the prince of demons. Jesus responds by highlighting the absurdity of such an accusation and offers a powerful reflection on the kingdom of God. He emphasizes that a kingdom divided against itself cannot stand, and if He casts out demons by the power of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon them.

Sr. Gifty Anastasia Blewu, SMMC

This passage invites us to reflect on the nature of spiritual warfare and the presence of God’s kingdom in our lives. Jesus makes it clear that His power is not of this world, and that through Him, the forces of evil are being overturned. The Gospel calls us to examine our own hearts: Are we receptive to the kingdom of God, or do we resist His work out of disbelief or misunderstanding? Jesus urges us to make a choice — to either stand with Him or against Him. Ultimately, this passage reminds us that Jesus is the stronger one who has come to bind the strong and liberate us from the powers of darkness.

How is my/your demeanor in these days of prayer and fasting?
