Sister Gifty’s Reflection: Thursday, First week of Lent -Theme: Persevering spirit in Prayer

The central focus of this period is typically a call to deepen our relationship with God through steadfast prayer, trust, and action.

In the gospel according to Matthew 7:7-12, Jesus encourages, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.” This teaches us to approach prayer with persistence and faith. The metaphor of asking, seeking, and knocking reminds us that prayer is not a one-time effort—it requires endurance, belief, and active participation.

A model of perseverance in prayer is presented us in the Old Testament; Esther 14:1-14, where Esther exemplifies a persevering spirit through her prayer and fasting as she seeks divine intervention for her people. Her story teaches us that prayer, combined with action, can lead to transformation and hope.

1. The Nature of Prayer:True prayer is a dialogue of trust and love with God, not merely a list of requests.

2. Challenges in Prayer: Perseverance is necessary, especially when prayers seem unanswered, as God’s timing and will surpass human understanding.

3. Faith and Action: Like Esther, we are called to complement prayer with courageous actions rooted in faith.

Let this theme reminds us that Lent is not just about sacrifice but also about deepening our connection to God through patient, consistent, and faithful prayer.
