Sr. Francisca Kumevor of the Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Church (SMMC) Congregation, and trainees of the Mater Ecclesiae Skills Training Centre at Kwaekese, run by the SMMC in the Apostolic Vicariate of Donkorkrom, have marked the 2nd Edition of the “Eat Ghana, Wear Ghana” Day by showcasing the rich Ghanaian cultural heritage.

The April 4, 2024 cultural event, which was mandated by the Ghana Education Services to all Schools within the District, was dubbed “Eat Ghana, Wear Ghana, Dance Ghana and Sing Ghana.”

Sr. Kumevor, who is the Sister trainer, and in-charge of the Skills Training Centre, in an address during the ceremony, expressed that their purpose, as a Training Centre, for joining their fellow Ghanaians to celebrate the event was in a bit to showcase their culture, including what they wear, eat, drink, and even the soap they use for bathing and washing.

“We love to dress in Ghanaian wear, bathe with Ghana soap, drink Ghanaian drink, and do everything Ghanaian,” she celebrated, adding that they were excited to be part of Ghana’s story.

Showcasing the various food items and other products that the Skills Training Centre had produced to mark the cultural day, Sr. Kumevor encouraged Ghanaians to patronize local products over foreign goods, to uphold their cultural heritage.

Activities featured during the celebration in the Ewe-speaking community of Kwaskese included various Ewe cultural dances, a drama depicting a normal working day for the skills trainees and their trainer, in attempt to produce some Ghanaian fabric.

There was also a display by Ms. Juliet Tettey, one of the trainees, of the various traditional meals that the Centre had prepared, as well as beads, liquid soap, shower gel, among others, produced by the trainees.

In her presentation, Ms. Tettey called on Ghanaians to cherish and patronise local foods and products instead of foreign.

Present at the ceremony were Sr. Doris Josepha Mawuvi, SMMC, Headmistress of Mater Ecclesiae School, Kwaekese, who had earlier organized a similar celebration at her school, and Mr. Henry Bayor, a trainer at the Centre.

Also present were some community members who had come to assist in playing the drums which accompanied the dances.
