On Monday of the First Week of Lent, the Church presents readings that emphasize the importance of holiness, justice, and compassionate service. In the first reading from Leviticus 19:1-2, 11-18, God instructs the Israelites to be holy as He is holy, outlining moral and ethical guidelines such as honesty, fairness, and loving one’s neighbor as oneself. This passage underscores the call to live justly and uphold moral integrity.
The Gospel reading from Matthew 25:31-46 portrays the final judgment, where individuals are separated based on their acts of kindness and service to those in need. Jesus identifies with the marginalized, stating that serving them is akin to serving Him. This highlights the theme of compassionate service and the significance of caring for the less fortunate.
Collectively, these readings convey a theme of living a holy life through just actions and compassionate service to others. They challenge believers to embody God’s holiness by acting ethically and extending love and care to those in need.
In this season, let us watch out for this instruction,’You shall not’ for in this is the challenge of our Lenten observances. Should we pass the test in the first reading, the gospel on the judgement day will find us among the sheep at the right hand of God. Remember, whatever you do to the least of the brethren, you do it to Christ.
