HHCJ Novices Conclude Eight-Day Retreat

The second year Novices of the Congregation of the Handmaids of the Holy Child Jesus (HHCJ) have concluded their eight-day retreat in preparation for their first profession of vows.

The retreat commenced on the August 11 and ended on August 18, 2026 at the HHCJ Novitiate in Sunyani Nsoatre, Bono Region, Ghana.

Delivering the homily at the concluding Mass, the retreat moderator, Rev. Fr. Kpanie Addy, SJ noted that the day’s liturgical readings offer a deep sense of affirmation and confirmation for everyone present.

Drawing from the Gospel text where Jesus promises that anyone who leaves houses, family, or lands for His name’s sake will receive a hundredfold and inherit eternal life, he maintained that the key to understanding this promise lies in Psalm 16: “It is You, O Lord, who are all I have.”

He explained that in contemporary society, consecrated persons represent the Levitical class those who, by their consecration, have chosen to make the Lord their sole portion and inheritance. He stressed that when religious men and women attach themselves securely to Jesus, who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, they radiate true joy and peace despite the inherent challenges of religious life.

Elaborating on the promise of receiving a hundredfold here on earth, the retreat moderator emphasized that this reward is often realized through human relationships, goodwill, and mutual support. Reflecting on his own upbringing, he recounted how he was educated by religious sisters whose acts of tenderness, kindness, and discipline shaped his life and priesthood.

He cited the selfless care of missionary and local sisters alike as concrete examples of the impact of religious witness, urging the novices to recognize that their dedication leaves a lasting mark on society, even if it often goes unsung.

Concluding his message, Fr. Kpanie urged the novices both those preparing for their first profession and those transitioning into their second year to remain steadfast. He exhorted them to approach their commitment with passion, diligence, and grace, ensuring that by clinging firmly to Christ, they will experience His hundredfold blessing in this life and ultimately inherit eternal life.
